Bird Behaviour and Training Guide

Bird behaviour and training are best understood through species-appropriate communication, predictable routines and positive experiences. Training should improve cooperation rather than rely on fear or force.

Read normal behaviour first

Learn the bird's normal posture, vocalisations, activity and interaction patterns. Birds communicate through body language as well as sound, and behaviour can change with environment, social context, sleep and health. A sudden behavioural change should not automatically be treated as a training problem; illness or stress can present as altered behaviour.

Build useful behaviours gradually

Training can help with step-up, recall, entering a carrier, accepting routine care and cooperating with handling. Use calm repetition and rewards that are appropriate for the bird. Keep sessions short enough to maintain engagement and avoid forcing a frightened bird into a situation. Reward desirable behaviour and make the environment predictable so the bird can learn what is expected.

Socialisation and boundaries

Socialisation means helping a bird become comfortable with normal household experiences while respecting its individual limits. Introduce new people, objects and environments gradually. Provide safe retreat areas and sufficient rest. If biting, screaming, feather damage or another difficult behaviour develops suddenly, investigate environmental and health causes as well as training. Specialist veterinary or behaviour advice can be valuable for persistent problems.
