Bird Perches and Stands Guide

Bird perches and stands affect movement, foot use and access to different areas of the enclosure. Variety and suitability are more important than simply providing one uniform perch.

Choosing perches

Perch size and material should suit the species and allow a comfortable grip. Different safe surfaces and diameters can provide variety, but they should not create pressure points or unstable footing. Avoid damaged, splintering or contaminated materials. Position perches so they do not sit directly over food or water where droppings could contaminate them.

Stands and exercise areas

An external stand can provide a supervised area for movement and interaction. It must be stable and placed away from hazards such as cooking surfaces, open doors, fans, windows and toxic fumes. Larger birds may require particularly robust equipment because of their weight and strength.

Inspect and maintain

Check perches and stands regularly for cracks, loose fittings, sharp edges and contamination. Replace damaged items promptly. Provide enough space for the bird to move between perches without constant obstruction. If foot problems, lameness or changes in grip appear, seek veterinary advice rather than trying to solve a possible medical issue solely by changing equipment.
