Common companion-bird groups

Companion birds include small species such as budgerigars and finches, as well as larger parrots and other specialist birds. Their size, activity, social needs, diet, lifespan and housing requirements can differ substantially. A name or colour variety is not enough information for a responsible choice; prospective owners should learn the needs of the exact species or type.

Compare needs, not appearance

Consider noise, space, daily interaction, flight and exercise opportunities, diet, enrichment and veterinary access. Some birds are highly social and may need substantial interaction or suitable companionship, while others have different requirements. Housing should allow normal movement and should not be selected purely because it is marketed as convenient or attractive.

Research before bringing a bird home

Ask a reputable source for the bird's species, age, diet and history and prepare the environment before arrival. If buying or keeping less common or wild species, check whether additional legal or licensing requirements apply. Government guidance notes that some captive-bird and wild-bird situations have specific rules. A good choice matches the bird's needs with the owner's time, space, experience and resources.
