Choose a complete cat food^★

Cats have specific nutritional requirements and should normally be fed a complete cat food suitable for their life stage. Cats^★ Protection advises choosing food labelled “complete”; complementary foods and treats are not intended to supply the whole nutritional requirement on their own. Fresh water should always be available and refreshed regularly. Food and water bowls should be positioned thoughtfully, with litter trays kept away from feeding areas.

Match the routine to the cat

Kittens, adults and older cats have different needs, and portion size depends on factors including age, weight and activity. Follow the manufacturer's feeding guidance as a starting point and check body condition periodically. Cats often prefer smaller, more frequent meals. Wet food provides moisture, while dry food can be useful in puzzle feeders; either can be used where the food is complete and appropriate. Treats should be limited and the normal food allowance adjusted if necessary.

Changes and warning signs

Introduce a new food gradually rather than changing the diet abruptly. If a cat suddenly eats or drinks differently, loses or gains weight unexpectedly, or stops eating, contact a vet rather than repeatedly changing foods. Cats with medical conditions may need a veterinary-prescribed diet. Homemade, vegetarian or vegan diets should not be improvised because nutritional imbalance can be harmful.
