Build the basic kit around the work

A construction toolkit normally needs accurate measuring and marking equipment, general hand tools^★ and task-specific powered equipment. Select tools according to the materials being worked and the frequency of use. For drilling and fixing, match the drill, bit and fixing system to the substrate rather than choosing a machine in isolation.

Consider site conditions

Construction environments can involve dust, weather, limited power supplies^★, access restrictions and work at different heights. Cordless equipment can be useful where mains power is unavailable, but batteries and chargers still need suitable storage and handling. Choose equipment that can be transported and protected without creating additional trip or manual-handling problems.

Check safety and suitability

Before using powered equipment, inspect guards, accessories, cables or batteries and follow the manufacturer's instructions. HSE guidance on work equipment stresses suitability, information, training and maintenance^★. For dusty cutting, drilling or grinding, plan extraction and appropriate PPE around the material and process rather than treating a disposable mask as the complete control.
