Separate general tools from electrical duties

Select each item for the conductor, enclosure or component involved. Where electrical safety depends on insulation or an approved tool specification, verify the manufacturer's stated suitability rather than relying on appearance.

Test equipment deserves particular care

Electrical test and measurement equipment should be appropriate to the system and measurement being made. Follow the instrument manufacturer's instructions, inspect leads and probes and use the correct ranges and accessories. Tool selection cannot replace safe isolation procedures or appropriate competence.

Consider the work environment

Drilling, fixing and access work may introduce additional hazards such as dust, hidden services, sharp edges and awkward positions. Powered tools should be inspected and used with suitable guards and accessories. HSE work-equipment principles emphasise suitability, information, training and maintenance^★; electrical work should also follow the relevant professional procedures and regulations for the specific job. For any task involving potentially live equipment, tool choice is only one part of the safety process. Electrical isolation, identification of the circuit and the correct working procedure are fundamental. If a job requires professional electrical competence, use the appropriate qualified person rather than treating a tool list as a substitute for that competence.
