Choosing Tools for Flooring

Identify the floor material first

Laminate, engineered timber, solid wood, vinyl and other flooring products can require different cutting and fitting methods. Follow the flooring manufacturer's installation instructions and select accessories accordingly. The thickness and construction of the material can affect which saw or cutter is appropriate.

Build around accurate fitting

A tape measure^★, square, straightedge, spacers and suitable marking tools help establish accurate cuts. Fine cutting and fitting tools are useful around door frames, thresholds and awkward edges. Secure the material where appropriate and avoid using excessive force simply to make a tool cut faster.

Control powered cutting hazards

Saws and other powered cutters can create dust, noise and flying fragments. Use suitable guards and accessories and connect extraction where appropriate. HSE guidance stresses safe mounting of tools, correct setting and adjustment, maintenance^★ and control of hazards around moving machinery. Keep the work area organised so cables and offcuts do not create additional risks. For powered saws, use the guard and accessory specified for the machine and support the material so the cut remains controlled. Plan where the offcut will fall and keep hands clear of the blade path. Good preparation is particularly important for long boards and large sheets, where unsupported material can move unexpectedly.
