Food, grooming and health

Choose complete food appropriate to life stage and follow feeding guidance. Grooming varies with coat type. Regularly observe the cat's appetite, weight, coat, eyes, mouth, mobility and behaviour so changes can be noticed early.

Veterinary care^★ and identification

Arrange routine veterinary care and follow professional advice on vaccination, parasite control, neutering and dental care. In England, cats must be microchipped and registered by 20 weeks under current GOV.UK rules. Sudden or persistent health or behaviour changes warrant veterinary advice. Environmental needs matter as much as feeding. Provide places where the cat can hide, rest and observe from a safe position, and offer appropriate scratching and play opportunities. In multi-cat homes, spread important resources through the home rather than forcing cats to share one crowded area. Changes in toileting, appetite, grooming or social behaviour should be taken seriously.
