Select for the material

Diamond blades are not a single-purpose product. Blades are manufactured for particular materials and applications, so check the manufacturer's stated suitability for concrete, masonry, paving, tiles or other materials. Match the blade diameter, bore and permitted operating speed to the machine. Never assume that a blade intended for one material is suitable for another simply because it physically fits.

Wet and dry cutting are different

Some diamond cutting applications use water to suppress dust and can also help manage heat and blade wear. Other systems are designed for dry cutting with appropriate extraction or dust controls. The correct method depends on the blade, machine and material. HSE guidance on cut-off saws identifies dust, flying debris, noise and hand-arm vibration as hazards requiring control. Use the method specified for the equipment and work.

Inspect, cut and maintain carefully

Before use, inspect the blade and machine, check the guard and ensure the workpiece is stable. Do not force the blade through material or use a damaged cutting accessory. When cutting masonry or similar materials, consider segregation where fragments could reach other people. HSE guidance also highlights suitable eye protection, hearing protection^★, respiratory protection where required and maintenance of cutting equipment.
