What to look for

Dog boots are protective footwear designed to cover a dog’s paws. They can help protect paws from cold surfaces, ice, grit and some environmental hazards. Boots may be useful for winter conditions, rough ground or dogs whose paws need additional protection. They are not required for every dog.

Poorly fitted boots can cause rubbing or loss of normal movement. Remove them if the dog shows pain, distress or abnormal walking. Never assume boots make unsafe weather safe. RSPCA specifically includes boots among possible winter paw-protection measures. Prioritise correct sizing, secure but comfortable fastening, grip, flexibility and easy cleaning. Choose according to the individual dog's size, behaviour and needs, follow manufacturer instructions and inspect the product regularly for damage or poor fit. Equipment should support welfare and normal movement rather than restrict, frighten or injure the dog.
