## Choose a complete diet for the individual dog A suitable feeding routine starts with a food appropriate to the dog's life stage and circumstances. Portion guidance on the packaging is a useful starting point, but it is not a universal prescription: the amount required depends on the dog's size, age, activity, body condition and the energy density of the food. Measure food consistently rather than estimating by eye, and consider treats and other extras as part of the overall intake. ## Understand food types and feeding routines A complete commercial dog food★ is formulated to provide the nutrients a dog needs when fed as directed. Complementary foods are intended to be combined with other foods rather than used as the sole diet. Wet and dry foods differ in moisture and energy density, so compare feeding guidance rather than assuming equal weights provide equal calories. Fresh drinking water should always be available. Changes in food are best introduced gradually, especially for dogs that are sensitive to dietary changes. ## Review portions using body condition A bowl being emptied does not prove that the portion is correct. Monitor weight, body condition, appetite, stool quality and activity over time. Puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, working dogs and dogs with diagnosed medical conditions may need a different approach. If appetite changes persist, weight changes unexpectedly, digestive problems recur or the dog is significantly overweight or underweight, veterinary advice is more appropriate than repeatedly changing food.
