Control dust at the source

Choose tools and accessories that support effective extraction where available. Connect extraction equipment correctly and keep hoses, collection systems and filters maintained. Select extraction for the task

A domestic vacuum is not automatically suitable for hazardous workshop dust. Check the extraction system's intended use, filtration and compatibility with the tool and material. Keep the collection system maintained and avoid practices that simply redistribute settled dust into the air. The appropriate control depends on the material, quantity of dust and work process.

Use RPE where the risk assessment requires it

Respiratory protective equipment is a supplementary control when exposure cannot be adequately controlled by other means. HSE guidance for certain dusty cutting operations specifies suitable RPE and fit testing for tight-fitting equipment. The exact RPE selection must match the hazard and manufacturer's requirements. Facial hair can affect the seal of tight-fitting equipment, so fit must be properly assessed.
