1. Breed overview

A distinctive marked rabbit with a white blaze/collar and coloured rear body. It is a longstanding fancy breed and is generally considered a small-to-medium rabbit.

2. Appearance and identifying characteristics

Dutch should be identified using recognised breed characteristics and current UK rabbit-show terminology. Colour, pattern, ear type, coat type and body size can be important, but individual rabbits^★ may vary and pet quality is not determined by show markings alone.

3. Temperament and behaviour

Breed tendencies can provide a useful starting point, but individual temperament varies. Rabbits are social prey animals and need opportunities to exercise, forage, hide, explore and interact appropriately with compatible companions.

4. Housing and exercise

Housing should be chosen for the rabbit's actual adult size and activity level^★, not simply because the breed is described as small, dwarf or giant. Provide a secure home, dry shelter, exercise space, hiding places and protection from predators and weather.

5. Diet and health

A healthy rabbit diet is mainly based on hay and/or grass, with suitable fresh water and an appropriate balanced supplementary diet. RSPCA guidance stresses that reduced eating or droppings can indicate serious illness. Dental and digestive health are particularly important in rabbits.

6. Grooming and handling

Grooming requirements depend heavily on coat type. Long-haired and some lop varieties require additional grooming and closer attention to ears and coat condition. Handle rabbits calmly and support the hindquarters properly; never lift by the ears.

7. Choosing and buying

Prospective owners should check the adult size, coat care, ear type, housing requirements and temperament of the individual rabbit. Breed-club and British Rabbit Council information can help with breed identification, while welfare organisations are useful for general care guidance.

8. UK research notes

The British Rabbit Council is the UK governing body for rabbit showing and breed standards; current UK show schedules list many of these breeds and varieties. RSPCA guidance should be used for welfare and day-to-day care rather than show standards alone.
