Essential Bird Supplies Checklist

A bird-supplies checklist should cover the bird's actual welfare needs first and optional accessories second. Species, size, age and lifestyle determine what is suitable.

Essential housing supplies

Prepare an appropriate enclosure, secure doors, suitable perches, feeding and drinking equipment and safe substrate or flooring where required. The enclosure should support normal movement and allow easy cleaning. Check that accessories are correctly sized for the bird and cannot trap feet, wings or beaks.

Food, hygiene and care supplies

Keep an appropriate food supply, fresh-water equipment and cleaning materials that are safe to use around birds. Store food securely and keep feeding equipment clean. If the bird needs specialist supplements or care products, use veterinary or species-specific advice rather than adding products routinely.

Enrichment and emergency preparation

Provide safe enrichment suited to the species, such as foraging opportunities, suitable toys or climbing and perching options. Inspect items regularly and remove damaged pieces. Keep a suitable carrier available for veterinary visits and emergencies. A good checklist also includes the bird's usual food, contact details for veterinary care^★ and any current records needed for treatment or travel.
