Select the right tool

Choose a tool designed for the job rather than improvising with an unsuitable item. A screwdriver^★ is not a substitute for a chisel, and a cutting tool should be appropriate to the material and operation. The handle, grip and size should allow controlled use without excessive force.

Inspect condition before work

Look for damaged handles, loose heads, worn cutting edges, cracked insulation where relevant and other defects. Keep cutting edges protected when tools are stored or carried. Striking tools need secure heads and suitable handles. Remove defective tools from use instead of trying to work around a known fault.

Work with control

Secure the workpiece where appropriate and keep the path of the tool clear of your hands and body. Wear suitable eye protection where fragments could be produced. Keep tools clean and dry enough to maintain control. Good housekeeping also matters: tools left on floors, benches or access routes can create additional hazards. The same principle applies to older tools inherited from a previous workshop. Age alone does not make a tool unusable, but damage, looseness, corrosion or a poor repair can make it unsuitable. Clean and maintain tools in line with the manufacturer's instructions and keep them where they cannot fall onto people or damage sharp edges.
