Rabbit Breeds Guide

1. What rabbit breeds are

Rabbit breeds are domesticated varieties selected for particular body types, coat characteristics, colours, markings, ear forms and other traits.

2. UK breed groups

Current UK rabbit-show organisation commonly divides breeds into sections such as Fancy, Lop, Fur and Rex. Individual show schedules provide the current classes and recognised varieties.

3. Size and housing

Breed size affects the amount and strength of accommodation required. Giant rabbits^★ need substantially more room and robust equipment than dwarf breeds.

4. Coat and grooming

Long-haired breeds such as Angora and Cashmere types require more coat management. Rex and short-coated rabbits generally have different grooming needs.

5. Lop and ear types

Lop breeds have drooping ears and require appropriate ear checks and careful handling. English Lops have particularly long ears and therefore need equipment and environments that minimise injury risk.

6. Choosing responsibly

Consider welfare, space, time, costs, companionship and veterinary care^★ before selecting a breed. Appearance should not be the only deciding factor.
