Secure outdoor space

Outdoor rabbits need a secure environment that allows normal movement while protecting them from predators, escape, severe weather and disease risks. RWAF recommends a permanent area of at least 3m x 2m x 1m for up to two rabbits^★, with suitable shelter and room to run, jump, hide, dig and forage. A small hutch alone should not be treated as adequate permanent accommodation.

Weather and predator protection

The enclosure should be robust and regularly checked for weak points, gaps and damaged mesh. Provide dry shelter and shade, while avoiding locations exposed to excessive heat, wind or flooding. Outdoor rabbits should also be protected from contact with wild rabbits and other animals where possible. The RSPCA recommends keeping pet rabbits away from wild rabbits and areas where wild rabbits live because of disease risks.

Daily outdoor management

Outdoor care requires routine inspection. Check water, hay, food, bedding, fencing and shelter every day and remove wet or soiled material. Rabbits can be affected by flystrike, particularly when their rear end becomes dirty, so daily hygiene checks are essential. Good outdoor housing combines permanent space, companionship, weather protection, predator security and close observation rather than relying on a hutch or run used separately.
