Useful types of enrichment

Rabbit enrichment should encourage natural behaviour rather than simply provide objects to chew. Rabbits^★ benefit from opportunities to forage, dig, hide, explore and move. Safe cardboard tunnels or boxes, suitable digging areas, hiding places and forage-based feeding can add variety to the environment. Hay can be positioned so that the rabbit has to search or move between safe feeding areas.

Foraging and digging

The best enrichment depends on the individual rabbit and the available space. Rotate safe activities rather than filling the enclosure with too many items at once. Observe what the rabbit enjoys and remove anything that becomes damaged or unsafe. Avoid toys with loose small parts, sharp edges, toxic coatings or materials likely to cause problems if swallowed.

Safety and rotation

Enrichment cannot compensate for inadequate housing, diet or companionship. RWAF's welfare strategy emphasises an environment that allows rabbits to run, jump, graze, dig and rest, while RSPCA guidance highlights the importance of appropriate food and socialisation. Use toys as additions to a good living environment. If a rabbit suddenly loses interest in activities or becomes withdrawn, consider whether pain, illness, fear or another welfare problem may be involved and seek veterinary advice when appropriate.
