Welfare needs of pet rabbits

Responsible rabbit care covers diet, housing, exercise, companionship, enrichment and protection from illness or injury. Rabbits are active, social animals with specific environmental needs, so equipment should be selected around welfare rather than appearance or the convenience of the owner. A suitable setup should provide secure shelter, room to move, hiding places, appropriate feeding resources and daily opportunities for normal behaviour.

Housing, diet and companionship

Rabbits need daily exercise and, where appropriate, compatible rabbit companionship. Housing should protect them from predators, weather extremes and escape while providing enough usable space for the rabbit or bonded group. Rabbits and guinea pigs should not be treated as substitute companions. Neutering and careful introductions can be important parts of responsible management.

A rabbit that stops eating or produces fewer droppings can be seriously unwell and needs prompt veterinary attention. Avoid unsafe flooring, exposed electrical cables, toxic materials and poorly ventilated housing. Children should be supervised when handling rabbits.
