Choosing substrate

Aquarium substrate provides more than decoration. Gravel, sand or specialist planted-aquarium materials can influence how the tank looks, how plants root and how fish interact with the bottom. The correct choice depends on the species and layout. Some bottom-dwelling fish benefit from suitable smooth substrate, while planted systems may have different requirements.

Matching substrate to fish

Choose material that is aquarium-safe, appropriately sized and free from sharp edges or contaminants. Consider how easily waste can be removed and whether the substrate is suitable for burrowing or foraging species. Cleaning without harming the filter
