Prepare before buying

Responsible tropical fish buying starts before visiting a shop. The aquarium should be appropriately sized, fully cycled and tested, with ammonia and nitrite at zero. Research each intended species, including adult size, temperature, water hardness, diet, social needs and compatibility. OATA advises checking that all final species choices are compatible and that the aquarium can accommodate fish when fully grown.

Assess fish and seller

When choosing fish, look at the condition of both the individual fish and the tank. RSPCA recommends using shops with healthy animals and well-maintained tanks, and watching for normal swimming, intact fins, clear eyes and absence of obvious disease signs. Avoid buying a fish simply because it is inexpensive or attractive if the aquarium cannot meet its requirements.

Transport and settle new fish

Transport the fish home promptly and acclimatise them carefully. OATA recommends minimising exposure to bright light, temperature extremes and unnecessary movement. After introduction, monitor behaviour and water quality closely. Responsible adoption or rehoming decisions should apply the same welfare standard as retail purchases: the fish needs a suitable aquarium for life, compatible companions where required and an owner prepared for ongoing maintenance^★. Never release unwanted aquarium fish into the wild.
