Why habitat is enrichment

Tropical fish generally do not need conventional toys. Their enrichment comes from an aquarium that allows natural movement, exploration, hiding, foraging and social behaviour. Plants, rocks, caves, wood and other aquarium-safe structures can provide useful habitat features when selected for the species. Some fish need open swimming areas, while others benefit from dense cover.

Plants, cover and structure

RSPCA advises researching each species' natural environment and behavioural needs before choosing tank mates. OATA care sheets similarly recommend suitable plants or ornaments that provide shelter. Community fish should not be forced into a layout that leaves timid species permanently exposed or gives territorial fish insufficient space.

Safe enrichment choices

Enrichment must never compromise water quality or create injury hazards. Avoid unstable ornaments, sharp edges, trapping spaces and decorations that alter water chemistry unpredictably. Observe how fish use the environment and rearrange only when necessary, because repeated major changes can also be stressful. If fish show unusual hiding, aggression or breathing, test water quality before assuming they need more stimulation. A stable, species-appropriate habitat is the most useful form of enrichment.
