1. Take a backup
Keep a copy of the website files and any databases before making changes.
2. Prepare the new hosting
Check PHP versions, database availability, storage, SSL and any required server settings before the domain is moved.
3. Move the files and database
Copy the website files and restore the database. Update configuration values where the new environment differs.
4. Test before changing DNS
Use a suitable temporary or preview arrangement to test pages, forms, database connections, logins and other important functionality.
5. Check email and DNS
Domain records may control both the website and email. Make sure the required records are understood before changing them.
6. SSL and redirects
Confirm HTTPS works and that important URLs and redirects continue to behave as expected.
7. Switch and test again
After DNS changes have propagated, test the live website again from different devices and check the main visitor journeys.
